This speech was delivered by Moses O. Dickson, Esq, Principal and Managing Solicitor of Triax Solicitors on the occasion of the University of Nigeria Students Bar Association (UNSBA) Bar Conference on Saturday, 18th November 2017 at the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus.
I am very honoured to stand here as a guest to this august body and I thank the Faculty of Law, and the UNSBA for such a privilege and for the award.
The theme of this Conference, the Changing face of Law Practice in Nigeria is very apt and apposite, and couldn’t have come at a better time. The Legal Practice in this country is fast evolving and assuming different dimensions from what used to be, and there is an urgent need for all Lawyers and law students alike to warmly embrace the changes; rise to the challenges posed and explore the opportunity the change brings along.
Today, the clients are more enlightened, and the internet has opened up the space to all manner of persons to gain access to information which hitherto was the exclusive preserve of a few. Clients needs are becoming more complex. New areas of practice are arising, and daily, opportunities present to themselves to the Legal practitioner to come in contact with novel issues requiring innovative thinking and approach. The world has become a global village and clients now have the opportunity of comparing the Nigerian Legal Practitioner with his counterpart from other jurisdictions and scrutinize service delivery in terms of quality and professionalism.
At Triax Solicitors, we have not only embraced the change; we are championing it and taking advantage of the vista of opportunities it offers to redefine Law and business. We believe that legal Practice is a serious business and the Practitioner is an entrepreneur who requires all the entrepreneurial sagacity and acumen which stands one practitioner apart from the other. To excel in this rapidly changing practice, one has to approach Legal practice with the competitive spirit that engenders prompt and qualitative service delivery, professionalism and innovations. These are our guiding principles at Triax Solicitors: Professionalism, Prompt and Qualitative service delivery,s and Innovations.
As a Firm, we are interested in specialization. We believe that Lawyers should be able to specialize in specific areas of practice to enhance expertise and encourage professionalism. We encourage that instead of engaging in all areas of practice and excelling at none, Lawyers should find a niche and fit into. Develop an area of interest and concentrate thereon to make a name. Excellence comes from consistence, training and discipline and all these come with specialization.
To drive our innovations, we have come up with several novel products one of which is Legalxpress. Legalxpress is an online platform that connects clients to the lawyers. By creating an account, the client has access to legal practitioners for legal services anytime and anywhere. The platform also has an interface to fast-track a variety of corporate transactions with select regulatory agencies such as CAC, Ministry of Trade and Investment etc. On the platform, you can transact Trademarks Registration, Patents, Copyrights, Legal due diligence and so many otherss. Lawyers who need their profiles included in the Directory only have to upload their information online and they are connected to clients with just a click.
We have also launched the Triax Law Series to report on a selection of pungent cases which appear to introduce or modify existing principles that materially settles question of doubtful law or cases that are peculiarly instructive. The series encourage lawyers and students alike to engage in research and offers them the opportunity to have their research works published.
The Nigerian Lawyer should be be enthusiastic about the changing trends in the practice and embrace it with determination, entrepreneurship, professionalism and pride.
May I seize this opportunity to congratulate the Faculty of Law, University of Nigeria on being the foremost Faculty of Law in Nigeria. You have not only created the standard but have consistently maintained the standard in academic excellence, training and discipline. Please keep the flag flying.
Thank you and God bless you all.
